A Teen Kills His Parents And Throws A House Party With Their Corpses

A murderous teen commits a brutal act of murder before celebrating with friends...

Born in December 1993, Tyler Hadley had long been a source of concern for his parents, Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley of Port St. Lucie, Florida, due to his increasingly troubling behaviour.

During his teenage years, Tyler frequently acted out, skipping school and becoming involved with drugs—both using and dealing various substances. Before long, he had accumulated a lengthy list of criminal charges, including arson, vandalism, theft, and aggravated battery.

In June 2010, at just 16 years old, Tyler struck a child with his father's car and was subsequently facing a $15,000 lawsuit.

The following year, recognising the increasingly dark path their son was heading down, Blake and Mary-Jo enrolled Tyler in a drug treatment program in hopes of helping him turn his life around.

Despite their efforts, Tyler continued to abuse drugs. Fearing that he would soon turn 18 and become estranged from them before they could help him recover, his parents began searching for another solution. Eventually, they found a new treatment centre—one that would admit Tyler as an inpatient.

However, when Tyler learned about their plans, he took drastic action that no one could have seen coming.

At school, Tyler was not a popular student, and the few friends he did have knew his parents to be strict.

That’s why, on July 16th 2011, when the 17 year old began inviting hundreds of classmates to his home for what he called “the wildest party of the summer,” many were surprised.

In the weeks leading up to the event, Tyler took to Facebook, repeatedly posting the message: “Party at my house.” When people asked whether his parents would be home, he simply replied, “Nope.”

Meanwhile, Tyler’s parents had no idea that their son was planning to host such a party at their home—and they had no intention of going anywhere.

Tyler Hadley used Facebook to spread the news of his party

Saturday, July 16th 2011—the day of the planned party—soon arrived. Inside the Hadley family home, the day initially unfolded like any other. Tyler’s older brother, Ryan, had already left for college in North Carolina weeks earlier, leaving Tyler alone in the house with his parents.

At around 5pm, Tyler Hadley decided to put his plan into motion.

After locking the family pet—a black Labrador—in a closet so it couldn’t come to his parents’ aid, he took an ecstasy pill. Tyler then retrieved a claw hammer from the garage and quietly approached his mother, Mary-Jo, who was sitting at the computer typing.

After watching her for several minutes, he raised the hammer and brought it crashing down onto her head with enough force to send her collapsing to the floor.

Blake, who had been in the couple’s bedroom, heard the commotion and came running—only to be confronted with the horrifying sight of his own son attacking his wife. For a brief moment, father and son locked eyes. Blake managed to utter a single word: “Why?”

Tyler responded calmly, his tone chillingly remorseless: “Why the f*ck not?”

He then turned his attention to his father, brutally bludgeoning him to death as well.

Blake and Mary-Jo were killed by their own son

In the three hours that followed, Tyler dragged the lifeless bodies of his parents into the master bedroom and wrapped towels around their heads. He then covered them with broken dishes, blood-stained towels, books, and other household items before locking the door.

Afterwards, he cleaned the crime scene and took a shower. Just after 8pm that evening, he posted to Facebook once again: "Party at my house, hit me up."

Less than two hours later, Tyler’s first guests began arriving at the house. He greeted them at the door, but gave them a warning:

As guests began arriving in their dozens, the party quickly got underway. Many of the attendees were people Tyler didn’t even know, but that didn’t matter to him—he finally felt important, noticed.

Before long, even the most popular jocks and cheerleaders were showing up at his door, and the crowd swelled to well over 100 people.

There was drinking, beer pong, and dancing throughout the house, with partygoers in high spirits. Not a single person realised that just metres away lay the bodies of Tyler’s parents—whose lives he had taken only hours earlier.

As the night went on, the party grew increasingly rowdy. The house was trashed: furniture was thrown around, cigarettes were stubbed out on the rug, and windows were smashed. At one point, a partygoer even joked that there was a foul smell of “dead people.”

Throughout the night, several guests asked Tyler where his parents were. Each time, he gave a different answer:

“They went to Georgia.”

“They’re in Orlando.”

“This is my house—they don’t live here.”

Another guest noticed bloodstains around the family computer but assumed it was simply a spilled drink.

Just after midnight, Tyler asked a friend to drive him to a gas station so he could buy more alcohol. Using his parents’ stolen credit card, he withdrew money to pay for additional beer.

By 2am, the party was still going, though the crowd had thinned to around 20 people. Around this time, a neighbour called the police to report a noise complaint.

When two officers arrived about thirty minutes later, Tyler hid the remaining guests in his bedroom before stepping outside to speak with them. He apologised for the noise and managed to convince the officers that nothing unusual was going on inside. Satisfied, they left—and the party continued.

The Hadley family home

As the party began to wind down, Tyler pulled his childhood best friend, Michael Mandell, aside and confessed that he had murdered his parents.

At first, Michael thought Tyler was joking—but Tyler soon led him to the master bedroom, unlocked the door, and revealed the bodies of his parents.

He even admitted that after committing the murders, he had stared at himself in the mirror and laughed, feeling not an ounce of remorse for what he had done.

Michael was horrified, yet he stayed at the party for another 45 minutes—and even took a selfie with Tyler. That image would later become one of the most infamous and haunting symbols of the case.

Just after 4am, Michael finally left the party and called 911 to report the murders. Police rushed to the Hadley home, arriving at 4:32am.

As the officers approached the front door, they heard loud talking coming from inside. Peering through the window, they saw Tyler Hadley pacing nervously and talking to himself, his eyes wide and unblinking.

Their knocks went unanswered for several minutes, until a dishevelled Tyler suddenly opened the door, one hand hidden behind his back. One officer drew his gun and ordered him to raise his hands. Tyler complied and was quickly handcuffed.

When asked if any adults were inside, he replied simply, “No.” As officers began entering the house, Tyler became frantic, shouting for them not to go in.

A scene of chaos

As officers navigated the chaos throughout the house, they soon reached the locked master bedroom—the room Michael had said contained the bodies.

Noticing streaks of dried blood along the door frame, they forced the door open. Inside, what greeted them was nothing short of a nightmare.

A post-mortem examination later revealed the horrific extent of the attack: Mary-Jo had suffered 36 heavy blows to the head with the hammer, while Blake had been struck at least 39 times to his head and chest.

Tyler Hadley was arrested and taken to the police station, where he was formally charged with the murders of his parents.

Tyler was later taken to the police station after his arrest

As the investigation unfolded, authorities spoke with Tyler’s friends and family to better understand the kind of person he had become. His older brother, Ryan, was devastated by the news of their parents’ murders—and even more heartbroken that the perpetrator was his own younger brother.

Investigators soon learned that Tyler had once been very close to his parents. As a child, he would stay up waiting for his father to return from late shifts at the power plant and spend hours each weekend playing basketball on the driveway with Blake. But something shifted when Tyler entered secondary school—he grew distant, withdrawn, and increasingly rebellious.

His family watched in anguish as he changed before their eyes, sinking deeper into drugs and criminal activity.

The weapon used during the murders

As news of the murders spread across America, the story gripped millions nationwide. Those who had attended Tyler’s party were profoundly shaken, struggling to reconcile the fact that they had celebrated while his parents lay dead inside the home.

Others responded in a far less empathetic, even juvenile, manner. One 16-year-old cheerleader who had been at the party remarked:

Another partygoer also commented:

As news of the murders spread across America, the story captivated millions. Some partygoers were deeply shaken, struggling to come to terms with the fact that they had celebrated while Tyler’s parents lay dead inside the house. Others, however, responded in a far more callous or juvenile manner. One 16 year old cheerleader who had attended the party remarked:

Tyler's brother: Ryan

As Tyler’s loved ones struggled to make sense of his motives, speculation ran rampant. One classmate, who barely knew him, went so far as to blame his parents, stating:

For other, the only explanation they had, was drugs. Tyler's own friends claimed that he consumed all types of drugs, commenting:

Tyler's mugshot

An inmate at the jail where Tyler was being held later testified that Tyler had admitted planning the murders for up to three weeks beforehand.

While in custody, Tyler became something of a celebrity, his notoriety fueled by the worldwide attention the case received. He even wrote to a friend, boasting:

As fan letters flooded into the jailhouse from disturbed individuals who looked up to Tyler Hadley, he happily responded to every one, even signing off as "Hammer boy" and joking "It's Hammer Time" - making light of the murder weapon used to slay his parents.

Tyler during sentencing

When writing to his grandparents however, Tyler came across as riddled with guilt, confused and delusional, writing:

Victims: Mary-Jo and Blake Hadley

Tyler Hadley’s trial began in 2014. Because he committed the murders before his 18th birthday, he was ineligible for the death penalty.

He was initially sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole. However, a successful appeal later overturned this ruling, granting him the possibility of parole.
