Truck Ramming and Gunfire at Michigan Synagogue

What We Know About the West Bloomfield Attack

West Bloomfield, Michigan — March 12, 2026

Authorities in suburban Detroit responded to a dramatic and frightening incident Thursday afternoon after an armed suspect drove a vehicle into a synagogue and opened fire, triggering what police initially described as an “active shooter situation.” The attack occurred at Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform synagogues in the United States, located in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan.

Law enforcement officials say the suspect is now dead, and remarkably, no children or congregants were injured, though one security guard was hurt and several emergency responders required medical attention due to smoke exposure.

What Happened

According to investigators, the attack began around 1:00 p.m. local time when a man drove a truck directly into the entrance of Temple Israel on Walnut Lake Road.

Officials say the suspect was armed with a rifle and forced his vehicle through the synagogue’s doors, driving into the building’s hallway before security personnel confronted him.

Security guards quickly engaged the attacker with gunfire. During the confrontation, the vehicle ignited, and the suspect was later found dead inside the truck. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether he died from gunfire or from the fire that followed the crash.

Authorities later discovered possible explosives and hazardous materials inside the vehicle, prompting bomb technicians and federal agents to sweep the area.

Children Inside the Building During the Attack

One of the most alarming aspects of the incident is that a preschool program was underway inside the synagogue at the time of the attack.

Officials confirmed that about 140 children were present, but all were safely evacuated and accounted for after the incident.

Parents rushed to the scene while police secured the building, and nearby schools were temporarily placed under lockdown as a precaution.

Authorities credited the synagogue’s trained security staff and rapid response procedures for preventing a much more devastating outcome.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Although the suspect was the only fatality, the attack still caused several injuries and a large emergency response.

Reported impacts include:

  • 1 security guard injured after being struck by the suspect’s vehicle
  • Around 30 law enforcement officers treated for smoke inhalation during the response
  • Fire and police crews from across the Detroit area deployed to the scene

Nearly 200 emergency vehicles and multiple federal agencies responded, including the FBI and ATF.

FBI: “Targeted Violence Against the Jewish Community”

Federal investigators are now examining the motive behind the attack.

The FBI described the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.”

Officials say the investigation will determine whether the incident qualifies as terrorism or a hate-motivated attack.

The synagogue involved, Temple Israel, serves thousands of members and is considered one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States.

A Growing Security Concern

The attack comes amid heightened security concerns at religious institutions across the United States.

In recent years, Jewish communities have faced increasing threats, including the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue massacre and other antisemitic attacks nationwide.

Because of these risks, many synagogues—including Temple Israel—already maintain armed security and emergency protocols. Officials say those measures likely prevented the situation from escalating into a mass casualty event.

The Investigation Continues

Authorities are still working to identify the suspect and determine the motive behind the attack. Investigators are examining the vehicle, weapons, and possible explosive materials found at the scene.

Officials also continue to interview witnesses and analyze security footage from the synagogue and surrounding area.

For now, the Jewish community in West Bloomfield is expressing relief that the attack did not result in the kind of tragedy that could have unfolded.
