The Significance of Expanding Your Perspective

Opportunities usually come from places where people never look.

Everyone thinks that entrepreneurs start with one big, brilliant idea and go off that one idea for the rest of their lives. But in reality, most businesses grow with a small idea and expand to new opportunities over time.

Expanding your perspective is important in almost everything you do. If you think one-dimensionally, your ideas won’t grow. It means increasing the range of things you’re willing to try. This applies in art, music, and even entrepreneurship. Artists expand their perspectives by trying out new colors. Musicians do it by learning new instruments. The more range you have, the more opportunities you can recognize.

I see this idea in my own business. I currently only collect plastic bottles, glass bottles, and cans to recycle them. But I began to wonder what would happen if I could no longer recycle them. What if a law changed, or the system stopped paying deposits? If that ended up happening, I’d have to start looking for other recyclable materials like cardboard or discarded electronics. Thinking like this is what pushed me to start expanding what I recycle.

I started to think like this because I wanted my business to stand out. I didn’t want to be just another recycling operation doing the same thing as everyone else. I made the big idea I had and modified it using other factors I noticed around me. One day, while collecting, I noticed that bottles weren’t the only thing people were throwing away. Cardboard boxes, e-waste, and scrap metal were also being thrown out a lot. This was actually the moment I started thinking about collecting other materials besides what I was currently getting. Broadening your range isn’t as hard as you might think, and it applies to day-to-day life. Try the food you said you hated. Or try a video game that everyone else likes. Expanding your range helps you participate in conversations and discover new interests.

Careers, creative outlets, and learning all apply to the same idea. Learning new things can not only make you more educated in multiple fields, but also increase your chances of getting hired for jobs. Increasing your creative outlet makes your ideas flow better and extends your overall range. Learning new things can make you better suited for jobs and give your ideas more depth. Try it out! Go and do something you always hear your friends talking about, even if you don’t think you’ll like it, trying it for the experience is always a good way to be engaged in conversation and get your own perspective on whatever it is you did. Going back to my business, I still collect bottles, but I’m starting to research collecting cardboard and e-waste to enhance my overall business journey.

A lot of people don’t like to expand because they don’t like what’s new to them, or are afraid of failing. But staying in your comfort zone won’t help you grow in any aspect of your life. Expanding your perspective doesn’t mean abandoning your original idea—it means building on it. The more things you’re willing to try, the more chances you give yourself to find new possibilities. I once had a friend who would complain to me that she couldn’t do anything when she left school, but she didn’t want to try anything new and continued to do nothing. This has taught me why leaving your comfort zone is important, even though I had already begun doing it myself. It doesn’t leave you at home bored with nothing to do, and always keeps you active, physically and mentally. It gives you more experiences, opportunities, and forms of connection.

I believe it’s important for young people like myself to think this way because it builds habits that matter later in life. How are you going to figure out what you want to do if you never try anything outside of what you already do? If you have big aspirations or you want to pursue something you’re passionate about, the first step is to try other things out to find an idea you’re comfortable with. Then build on it and take it further.

The more you expand your perspective, the more opportunities you’ll find around you. What originally looked like a boring or generic experience can become your favorite hobby. That shift in thinking can open those doors that you’ve never expected. I went from collecting just plastic bottles, glass bottles, and cans to learning about the benefits of collecting other recyclable materials. Expanding your perspective not only changes what you collect—it changes your view of the world.
