NBA Playoff Push 2026: Taking Shape

A number of teams qualified for postseason play during the past week of NBA action

This time of the month is a great time to be a basketball fan. In college hoops, the conference champions have been crowned, and the field of 68 has been set! The tournament will begin with the First Four games on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a four day weekend of first and second round action. As for the pros, the NBA season is down to the final four weeks, less than a month left until the regular season comes to a close.

So with that, let's take a look at the NBA's playoff picture with 28 days--four solid weeks--remaining:

In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons remain at the #1 spot at 48-19, with the Boston Celtics four games out at #2, and the New York Knicks at #3. The Cleveland Cavaliers sit at #4, but below that is where it gets interesting. The surging and red hot Orlando Magic have moved up to the #5 position at 38-28, sitting a half game ahead of the Toronto Raptors (38-29).

The logjam continues into the Play-In picture, with the Miami Heat at 38-30, seated at #7--a half game behind Toronto. The Philadelphia 76ers, who were in the Top 6 two weeks ago, are down to #8 in the conference, while the Atlanta Hawks (winners of nine straight) are barely behind Philly at #9. The Charlotte Hornets remain at #10 at 34-34. So you have 2.5 games separating #5 and #9, with the top two teams in the logjam finishing in the bottom of the Top 6, heading to the playoffs while the others deal with the Play-In.

In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder are still #1 with 53 wins, with the 49-18 San Antonio Spurs closing in. It's still cluttered between #3 and #6, with the Los Angeles Lakers at 42-25, while the Houston Rockets are a half game behind them and holding the #4 position. The Denver Nuggets and the Minnesota Timberwolves hold identical 41-27 records, but a tiebreaker places Denver at #5, while Minnesota sits at #6.

Regarding the Play-In picture, the Phoenix Suns sit at the #7 spot at 39-28, while the Los Angeles Clippers are at #8 at 34-33. The Golden State Warriors have lost five straight but still sit at #9, while the Portland Trail Blazers remain at #10. Overall, the past week saw seven teams join the postseason party, four from the West and three from the East, and as these standings show, they finally got the right letters up, because two weeks ago, they put the "x" next to OKC, but "x" means a playoff spot. OKC isn't officially in the playoffs yet. As the pics show, they have the right letters: "ps" for postseason.

Here's the playoff bracket if the season ended at this point. In the Eastern Conference, the Knicks would be facing the Raptors in one series, while the Cavaliers and Magic would face off in another series. The East's Play-In matchups would see the Heat host the Sixers, with the winner facing the Celtics, while the Hawks would host the Hornets, with the winner advancing to the #8 seed game, which would be for the right to face the Pistons. In the West, the Lakers would face the Timberwolves in one series, while the Rockets and Nuggets would face off in another series. The West's Play-In matchups would see the Suns host the Clippers, with the winner facing the Spurs, while the Warriors would host the Blazers, for a shot to play for the #8 seed and the right to face the Thunder. The standings could change at any time.

Four weeks remain in the NBA season, and again, nine teams are locked into the postseason, but there are no official playoff spots locked in yet. We should see at least one official playoff spot clinched this week, while more teams join the postseason party. The final four weeks will be immensely thrilling!
