The Prompt
Write a poem about hidden selves, disguises, or the truths we keep beneath the surface.
Some things stay hidden for a reason. A disguise can protect, distract, or reveal more than it hides. Whether it’s a truth we carry quietly or a version of ourselves we only show in certain light, what’s beneath the surface often says the most.
Let your poem explore that space. The tension between the seen and the secret. The shift between who we are and who we appear to be.
Write like there’s a mirror behind the words.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must be:
- A poem (any style or structure is welcome)
- Between 100 and 500 words.
- Submitted to the Poets community. Your story will be disqualified if it is submitted to any other community.
- Submitted before October 10, 2025 at 11:59 PM EST.
- Your work must be original and unpublished.
The Prizes
- 5 Winners: $200 each

A Transparent Look at Vocal Challenges and Top Stories
Almost three years ago, we shared a resource article that served as a place for people to suggest new challenge prompts. We thought it would be a good idea to refresh that thread, and take the opportunity to answer a few common questions about top stories, how challenges are judged and how submissions are reviewed.

A System That Isn’t Working Challenge Winners
Systems promise order. They organize behavior, distribute opportunity, and suggest that if everyone follows the rules, things will work. The entries in A System That Isn’t Working look closely at what happens when that promise begins to slip.
