About this challenge
The Prompt
Write a poem that states its central concern directly without metaphor, indirection, or symbolic substitution.
Poems often rely on suggestion. They circle their subject, translate it into image, or defer meaning through metaphor. This challenge asks you to remove those layers.
State the poem’s central concern plainly. Name it. Address it directly. The language should not disguise or elevate the subject through symbolism or indirection. What replaces metaphor here is precision.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must be:
- A poem (any style or structure is welcome).
- Between 100 and 500 words.
- Submitted to the Poets community. Your story will be disqualified if it is submitted to any other community.
- Submitted before March 27, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST.
- Your work must be original and unpublished.
The Prizes
- 5 Winners: $200 each
- 15 Runners-up: $15 each
- 10 Honorable Mentions: $5 each

A Transparent Look at Vocal Challenges and Top Stories
Almost three years ago, we shared a resource article that served as a place for people to suggest new challenge prompts. We thought it would be a good idea to refresh that thread, and take the opportunity to answer a few common questions about top stories, how challenges are judged and how submissions are reviewed.

A System That Isn’t Working Challenge Winners
Systems promise order. They organize behavior, distribute opportunity, and suggest that if everyone follows the rules, things will work. The entries in A System That Isn’t Working look closely at what happens when that promise begins to slip.
