My Top 50 Favorite Sci-Fi/Thriller Movies of All Time
I realized after I made a list for "My Top 10 Favorite Horror Movies of All Time," I had to make a list for my top 50 favorite sci-fi movies too. Science fiction is my favorite movie genre. Let me know what some of your favorite sci-fi movies are!

***Author's Note***
I realize there are several repeats from past lists included on this one. Sci-fi is my favorite genre, so when I started creating a list of my top 10 favorites, I realized I had to make the list much longer to be able to fit and talk about all the amazing sci-fi films I love.
Please note, I typically combine my personal thoughts on each film with reviews I've read in assigning a ranking and rating out of 10. Some films might not have the best rating, but because I have a special place in my heart for them, they are higher up on the list. Further, since I watch a lot of sci-fi movies, if I see something new that would make the list, I will definitely update it!
If there are others you think I missed or you would recommend watching, be sure to leave those titles in the comments!
#1 - The Abyss 1989 (9.5/10)

My favorite movie of all time. If you do decide to give it a watch, go for the extended edition. Trust me.
#2 - Jurassic Park 1993 (9/10)

Adore the book and the film. An iconic, groundbreaking Spielberg masterpiece.
#3 - Nope 2022 (8.5/10)

Hilarious, extremely tense and disturbing all at the same time. Nope has it all, it’s such a great movie. I believe it is Jordan Peele’s best.
#4 - Mad Max: Fury Road 2015 (9/10)

On the surface, you might think this is just blood and gore. Well, there is a lot of that, but this film packs so much more. Dynamic, interesting characters, incredible action sequences and a truly meaningful story.
#5 - Alien 1979 (9/10)

The one that started it all. An incredible film.
#6 - Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1978 (8/10)

Love this movie, I really don't have any notes. Leaves you feeling extremely unsettled and makes your thoughts race about how you might handle a similar situation.
#7 - The Fly 1986 (8.5/10)

I was never throughly impressed by Jeff Goldblum's acting abilities until I saw this film. It's incredible, from the acting, to the effects, to the story. A must-see if you're a fan of body horror.
#8 - The Thing 1982 (8/10)

I'm jealous of Kurt Russell's hat in this film, it's awesome. The Thing is a practical effects and body horror triumph.
#9 - Prometheus 2012 (8/10)

I really liked the direction this film took in explaining the origins of the Xenomorph and how the human race ended up encountering it. While I think technically Aliens is better, I would watch this film before watching Aliens. Just my personal preference.
#10 - Reign of Fire 2002 (7.5/10)

Super underrated, I need to spread the word about Reign of Fire, it is such an awesome dragon movie! No magic, no fantastical land. Rather, this film takes a dystopian approach. Humans are trying to survive a dragon apocalypse. Highly recommend!
#11 - Aliens 1986 (9/10)

What I consider the second best film in the Alien franchise. An excellent movie.
#12 - E.T. The Extra Terrestrial 1982 (8.5/10)

I still can't believe the actor who plays Elliot in this film also plays the dad, Hugh Crain, in The Haunting of Hill House. I was obsessed with this film growing up, a childhood classic.
#13 - No One Will Save You 2023 (8.5/10)

Super creepy and builds the suspense exceedingly well. I recommend watching this with all the lights off.
#14 - Serenity 2005 (7.5/10)

I always get hit with a wave of nostalgia looking at movie posters for this one. A hidden gem, Serenity is a fun, action-packed sci-fi adventure film. It might remind you a little of Guardians of the Galaxy, minus the tunes.
#15 - The Substance 2024 (9/10)

A visceral experience that is not for the faint-hearted.
#16 - Annihilation 2018 (8/10)

Super unsettling, but such an interesting premise. This film leaves us feeling uncertain about so many things. Just when we think we know what is happening, we are thrown another curveball.
#17 - Companion 2025 (8.5/10)

I really hate modern movie trailers, I feel like the trailer for this film spoiled nearly everything about it. But, I still loved it. My advice: Go into this one completely blind for the best experience.
#18 - The Martian 2015 (8.5/10)

The reason I now consider Matt Damon to be one of my favorite actors of all time. An excellent movie.
#19 - Interstellar 2014 (8/10)

Makes me cry every time I watch. A beautiful film that makes us all wonder about the big, existential questions we might never be able to answer.
#20 - The Matrix 1999 (8/10)

Groundbreaking special effects, awesome stunts and action sequences, and of course, Keanu Reeves. Does it get much better than that?
#21 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day 1991 (8.5/10)

Better than The Terminator, I'll never get over how amazing the special effects look for its time.
#22 - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 2013 (8/10)

The best film of The Hunger Games franchise, in my opinion. The visual effects really kick things up a notch and the cast's performances are gripping. An amazing movie.
#23 - Avatar 2009 (8/10)

I still can't believe this film was released in 2009. Though the plot is relatively simplistic, it is a story almost everyone can relate to.
#24 - The Terminator 1984 (8/10)

Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. A classic film that I consider a must-see.
#25 - Inception 2010 (8/10)

Had to watch a few times to navigate through the plot, but that's part of the allure of a psychological thriller like Inception. Great movie.
#26 - Level 16 2018 (7.5/10)

Not very well known, but boy, does this film pack a punch. I bet you'll never guess the plot twist at the end, it is crazy. An awesome flick I found on a rainy day, highly recommend.
#27 - Greenland 2020 (7.5/10)

I kept seeing clips of this movie pop up on my social media and had to check it out. I love Gerard Butler, I was pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem.
#28 - The Hunger Games 2012 (7.5/10)

I remember seeing this movie in theaters for the first time, right alongside all the other teenage girls who had finished the books and were eager to see the characters come to life on-screen. A well-done film that translated the written story well, though I don't like comparing books to movies.
#29 - A Quiet Place 2018 (7.5/10)

Another great movie, but I've always thought it is a little overrated. Stellar cast and cinematography though. And of course, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are a power couple.
#30 - Don't Look Up 2021 (7/10)

While there are comedic scenes throughout this movie, I am always far more entertained by the sense of doom and frustration it manages to instill. Frightening and eye-opening.
#31 - Cloverfield 2008 (7/10)

An extremely well-executed and suspenseful found-footage movie, Cloverfield is one of my favorites. A great one to watch with friends!
#32 - I, Robot 2004 (7/10)

I might have to make another "10 Times Rotten Tomatoes and I Disagreed" list to include this film. Criminally underrated if you read through critic's reviews, but the audience score says it all!
#33 - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 2014 (7.5/10)

A solid film that showcases just how talented Jennifer Lawrence truly is as an actress.
#34 - Alien: Romulus 2024 (7.5/10)

A very exciting addition to the Alien franchise that paid homage to the original films. The use of practical effects was masterful!
#35 - Divergent 2014 (7/10)

As I've said before, criminally underrated.
#36 - War of the Worlds 2005 (7/10)

First discovered this movie while channel surfing when I was 11 or 12 years old. This film terrified me, but as I've grown older, it has become one of my favorites. It just looks and feels so real, it's disturbing.
#37 - Back to the Future 1985 (8.5/10)

A classic, but you do have to admit, upon closer examination, such a strange plot. Check out John Mulaney's take on the film and you'll see what I'm talking about.
#38 - The Fifth Element 1997 (7.5/10)

Such a goofy, action-packed 90s movie. I love Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman, every time I watch this film it just feels like they had so much fun with their roles. Love it!
#39 - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 2015 (7/10)

My least favorite of The Hunger Games movies, but still a great film. A satisfying ending to the franchise.
#40 - Avatar: Fire and Ash 2025 (7/10)

Pleasantly surprised by this one, I thought the Avatar movies would go downhill after The Way of Water. But this film was awesome, action-packed and reignited my interest in the Avatar films. Leave it to Cameron to keep us guessing.
#41 - The Lost World: Jurassic Park 1997 (6.5/10)

Let's get one thing straight: Dr. Ian Malcolm is no Dr. Alan Grant. However, it is interesting to see Jeff Goldblum star in this Jurassic Park sequel and see his character try desperately to warn everyone about the dangers awaiting them on an island teeming with dinosaurs.
#42 - Minority Report 2002 (7.5/10)

Had me on the edge of my seat the first time I watched it, so many twists and turns. Highly recommend giving it a chance.
#43 - Signs 2002 (7/10)

I always feel like this one tries a little too hard with its metaphors and deeper meanings. But the scares and suspense are very well done, and Mel Gibson's performance is heart-wrenching.
#44 - Alien: Covenant 2017 (7/10)

The first half of the movie is fantastic, it's the second half that gets into the weeds. Still a solid sci-fi film and addition to the Alien franchise.
#45 - Lucy 2014 (6.5/10)

Kind of out there and fails to tie up loose ends by the final scene. But still, this is a suspenseful, interesting film that teaches us a little about theoretical science as it relates to evolution and the human brain, and showcases Scarlett Johannson's badassery.
#46 - Back to the Future Part III 1990 (7/10)

I love Part III almost as much as I love the original Back to the Future. A fun watch with lots of heart.
#47 - Ready Player One 2018 (7/10)

I went to see this movie in theaters and fell in love. Not the best sci-fi movie out there and it definitely falls victim to cliches and predictability at times. But, it is a heartfelt story that will appeal to most video game lovers. Easter Eggs galore in this one!
#48 - The Thing 2011 (7/10)

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
#49 - The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes 2023 (7/10)

Hate Rachel Zegler... But I like this movie. A nicely done prequel.
#50 - Avatar: The Way of Water 2023 (6.5/10)

Visually striking, just like the other Avatar movies. But, I feel the plot and character development fall short. This one is a little boring and confusing at times, though I am excited to see where this franchise goes.
